Hey, there, it's Evan Nathaniel Grimm, and welcome to the latest episode of Astrology Unbound. Today, I'm going to be explicating the nature of this Mercury retrograde. Yes, mercury is officially retrograde. I'm going to explain what we're looking back on, what to anticipate in your personal life, and also what we may see unfold across the world. Before I begin, though, be sure to check out my Substack newsletter for an in-depth breakdown of my predictions for the globe, my step-by-step manifestation guides for each full moon, intention-setting recommendations for new moons, educational content and more. Now, I do have a free subscription service where you can access the key themes and key highlights of all the major astrological moments, but I also do have a paid service where you can get horoscopes, sign-by-sign predictions, and you can also access a monthly Zoom call where you can ask me questions live, and we can also talk about the transits. So let's talk about the topic of today Mercury retrograde. So, just before I start, though, remember that Mercury retrograde is a common phenomenon, so it's not a reason to be scared or fearful or anxious, but it does necessitate a more careful approach and some adjustments to your lifestyle. And what happens when a planet retrogrades? Well, when a planet retrogrades, it appears to be moving backwards in the sky, even though it's not actually. It's an optical illusion. So in Mercury's case, it has a sidereal cycle of just 88 days. So when it starts to lap the Earth, it is sort of like when two cars are driving side by side at very similar speeds, but there's a moment where you can't tell if the car next to you is moving forwards or backwards. And so with Mercury and Venus, the inferior planets, the retrograde occurs when they start to actually align with the Earth and eventually they do line up in between the Sun and the Earth. Symbolically speaking, when a planet retrogrades, we have to internalize that planet's energy and reflect on how to use that energy more effectively, efficiently. So when, let's say, mars is retrograde, you are reflecting on better ways to actually use your energy and how to recharge your batteries. Basically, when Venus is retrograde, you're revisiting your relationships and your values and your finances. Retrograde, you're revisiting your relationships and your values and your finances. When Jupiter's retrograde, you have to look inward for the opportunities. You have to reflect on opportunities that already came up when Jupiter was direct. When Saturn's retrograde, we are reflecting on our responsibilities, our professional lives. We are being scrutinized by Saturn quite closely. But when Mercury is retrograde, you know, the entire range of our like decisions and our choices are being revisited.
Speaker 1:So Mercury in the mythology is associated with Hermes. Think about Hermes in the Greek mythology as the messenger of the gods and Hermes, the messenger of the gods, is the psychopomp and again, the messenger. He is Apollo's brother and Hermes creates the caduceus and that's the winged staff with the two snakes coiled around it and that represents really the attainment of wisdom through alchemy, transmutation of energy up the spine, balancing opposite forces and more. Mercury has this sort of dualistic, trickster energy because of that and it's sort of mischievous and clever, but Mercury because of its sidereal cycle of just 88 days. That is another way to see how fast Hermes with the winged sandals moves and in keeping with that fast orbit, it is also speaking to the snap judgments we make every day, the quick decisions we make. And as Mercury speeds around again, think Hermes it just interconnects all these different things. It connects the ideas we have within our own minds, it connects two people in a conversation, it connects the internet together. It also rules over, like our transportation and logistics networks.
Speaker 1:So Mercury is responsible for the functioning of any society, but especially a modern society, when we're living in the information age, like Mercury literally is information and it's transactions and it's commerce, it's media, it's publishing. So, as you can imagine, when Mercury retrogrades things can go haywire because these interconnecting threads are suddenly frayed and there are issues and mishaps and glitches and things like that. As society advances, because information is everywhere now and as we you know, as the cost of data lowers and you know we eventually maybe get universal wi-fi or something, and information is just always at our fingertips, that creates a bigger problem when something breaks down, because either it's more centralized or we depend on it increasingly. And also, we are literally making more decisions each day than we ever have in human history. Like in a single day you probably make more decisions than you know some human 10,000 years ago did in the span of like three months. So we're processing more, we're making more decisions.
Speaker 1:Therefore, the Mercury retrograde, I think, can have a more. I mean it could just be more complicated. Now again, though, like I said at the beginning, it's not a reason to be scared or anything, because, again, mercury retrograde is common. It happens three to four times every calendar year. Because Mercury has such a quick orbital cycle, it's actually an opportunity to slow down and reflect on our decisions while Mercury was moving direct.
Speaker 1:So I'm going to save a full rundown of Mercury Mercury retrograde for an educational series, by the way, so I'm not going to fully explore that, but you get the gist of it. Mercury does rule over Gemini and Virgo, by the way, meaning it is strong, natural, naturally placed in those signs. It's exalted actually in Virgo as well, and the exaltation of a planet is a sign where the planet is welcome, it's like a welcome guest, which are the other immutable signs ruled by Jupiter, and Jupiter is the gas giant, always trying to reach outward for more and expand. And that expansive nature of Jupiter does not suit Mercury's more discerning needs. Because that's what Mercury does it breaks things down, it analyzes things and obviously, because that's what allows us to make decisions, is to go inside the library of our mind and find the words we need, or to assemble the pieces together to make a sound decision. But let's start to actually dive into the day-to-day transits and key moments of this Mercury retrograde cycle.
Speaker 1:Mercury retrograde officially begins on August 4th and ends on August 28th. Although there are pre and post shadow periods, I'm going to focus on the actual retrograde for this episode. So, first off, mercury stations retrograde on the night of August 4th on the West Coast or the morning of August 5th, depending upon where you are in the world and when Mercury stations retrograde and it slows down and, you know, is at a standstill. It allows us to kind of hit the pause button and maybe actually make sense of all the different tracks we have going on in our lives. Now, obviously it is also the beginning of the retrograde, so at that point the retrograde themes start to apply. We get more mileage by looking backwards, we have to be careful about how we communicate, we may run into people from our past and so on.
Speaker 1:But I do think that it is a powerful moment when Mercury actually stations because it does allow us, I think, to focus, to focus on what we want to reflect on during this retrograde what needs to be more, I don't know, efficient in our lives and how can we start to finish unfinished business like an unfinished project, or close the loop on certain things? So we start to enter this reflective period and in the sign of Virgo we can really refine and revisit, like our health routines, our diet, our exercise plan, our daily lifestyle, and we can also really zero in on a process that in our lives that's, you know, maybe already fairly ironed out, but that could be better. So, like maybe my production schedule for my podcast or your, you know your process at work, how you get things done. And so Mercury is in its exaltation, remember here. So the retrograde in Virgo can be very, very productive for you because you can find a way to be more productive or you can find a way to get to some sort of outcome or solution with fewer steps and right off the bat.
Speaker 1:It does form a wide square with Mars and Gemini. So you may be feeling slightly irritated in your everyday conversations on August 5th, but also with Mars and Gemini being about writing and in a lot of ways in communication, you could edit like a manuscript or you could also even like sift through data or like a data set or a database that you have with Virgo and Gemini both being active here. Those are both analytical signs, mercury ruled signs. So you know, august 5th doesn't have to be negative, doesn't have to be challenging for you. Could be a day to really get down into the details of a process or a data set or something like that. But definitely Be mindful of like. I mean just avoid getting roped into like really useless debates, especially about myopic, you know, sorts of topics.
Speaker 1:And then we do have Venus and Virgo as well, sort of nearing a conjunction with Mercury, and that's going to happen on August 7th, on Wednesday. So the retrograde connection to Venus there could recall some past relationships for you, like, you might actually maybe think about someone from your past or reconnect with someone from your past, and in Virgo being the sign of work, maybe you're reconnecting with a coworker, maybe you are actually finishing a very sophisticated art project. I mean, sometimes Venus and Virgo can actually really, you know, chisel down some sort of art project and refine it and make it very exceptional, like Venus and Virgo has a very fine attention to detail with something creative. And I think, collectively, we'll probably be reflecting on the state of the economy. I think, now that Venus is in a fallen position and eventually opposing Saturn, I think that we may be taking a closer look at the more problematic factors in the economy right now and you may see economists start to take a more pessimistic view of the economy, like TBD, if that actually means that the economy is in a challenged period, but we did get unemployment numbers that were worse than expected last week, but anyways, on August 7th would not be surprised if you hear from somebody or reconnect with somebody who you actually have a working relationship with.
Speaker 1:And then Mercury will continue to retrograde in Virgo up until August 14th. So during that retrograde in Virgo again it conjures the themes I mentioned around Virgo of like health and daily exercise and routines and so on. So then when it goes on August 14th it goes into Leo and I think that really starts to complicate this Mercury retrograde, because Mercury is going to start to square Uranus. Mercury is going to square Uranus again and the last time it squared Uranus was the CrowdStrike outage, actually in mid-July, and that CrowdStrike outage happened during the Mars-Uranus conjunction. So this Mercury retrograde is living in the aftermath of that Mars-Uranus conjunction. So I think once it goes back into Leo it squares Uranus, we're going to really witness the spillover effects of that crowd strike outage, like maybe there are continual issues with travel delays, flight delays, or maybe there are cybersecurity incidents that crop up or technological breakdowns, telecommunications issues like wireless operators breaking down.
Speaker 1:So I mean, so yeah, I just think there's a lot of procedural complications once it starts to square, your rawness, like suddenly something will work and then it won't, and like a device will overheat or something. So it's just like it's, it's just very random and it just feels like there's no consistency. There's no consistency to the flow of information, either in your own mind or through the internet, or through even your own devices, your tech devices like working and then suddenly not working, and you'll probably feel fairly restless at that time too. With Mercury Square, uranus, like you have to like fidget or like move around, and that could you know, that impatience could complicate a lot of things for you. You might rush through a conversation all of a sudden, even though it's a retrograde, you might drive too fast. So actually that's one thing I would say is, around August 14th, you probably want to drive more cautiously than usual, especially because Mars is squaring.
Speaker 1:Saturn, like I could see like some sort of headline stories about maybe an accident happening in like the rain during inclement weather. I could see like some headline about a drunk driving accidents. Um, and you know, saturn and Pisces being the water, I think there could be some like boating accidents as well and, um, maybe even just something disappearing into the water. I talked about that on my YouTube, but I just keep seeing that and also the Mercury retrograde square. Uranus, I think, can really generate some brilliant epiphanies, though I don't know. There's just like an insight that's coming through. That's almost genius. So that would definitely be the upside of that transit.
Speaker 1:But really, from August 14th through the Kazemi on August 18th, you are having these inconsistencies, you're experiencing this instability, you are having a thought and then not able to hold on to it. It has like this sort of ADHD vibe, sort of ADHD vibe. And then on the 18th though, like the clarity hopefully comes through and you're able to reach maybe some kind of conclusion about something or a decision about something. And that Kazemi typically I would say well, you know, there's clarity there and I did talk about that last week on my podcast Like maybe there was some clarity on that Kazemi. But with the square to Uranus it's like either going to be the most brilliant insight you've ever had or something like that, or it's going to be a moment where you think you have the answer and then Uranus is like, no, you don't. But I think, because a full moon is happening the next day, it should be more so on the revelatory side and hopefully that it will be some kind of clarifying epiphany.
Speaker 1:Now in the political sphere, this is lining up with the DNC, the Democratic National Convention. So around mid-August I just see that convention having some tricks up its sleeve. A little bit of just some surprising moments there, like with Saturn also opposite Venus, like with Saturn also opposite Venus. It's like, yeah, maybe there's some alliances that are forged at that convention that are long lasting, but it could also be that some alliance is broken down and maybe with Mars and Jupiter together square Saturn and Venus. It just feels like nobody in the party is getting everything they want and everyone's upset about it, like it doesn't feel like there's a very satisfying compromise, so it could be like they're upset about the VP pick. Or maybe there are different factions in the party that are forming.
Speaker 1:And keep in mind as even a bigger story to all of this, like I talked about on my YouTube channel the other week, we are going to see, I think, escalating conflict in the Middle East because of this Leo new moon that we just had featured a Mars-Eldebaran connection. So maybe there's something between Israel and Iran and I mean honestly any number of nations that just create some kind of discord within the party because maybe different wings of the Democratic Party have different positions on the Middle East and it could be any other range of issues. But maybe when we get some, maybe we get some economic news that's not so great during the convention and that somehow affects the party's plans or campaign in some way. But I also just see a lot of just procedural breakdowns during that convention and I don't know if that affects the actual election process, but it just feels like there's some kind of you know, legal or technical issue that's being squabbled over. And I mean I know that the nominee has to be solidified, like the candidates have to be established by a certain point in order for states to get them on the ballot. So it could be something where there's a complication or a delay or an argument in the process that has cascading impacts on election day in that way in some indirect or direct way.
Speaker 1:Now, also with that Venus-Saturn opposition during this Mercury retrograde, remember that the South Node is in Libra, so with any Venus-Saturn opposition like there can be the solidification of commitment, but combined with the South Node in Libra it feels a little bit more risky in the sense that some alliances could be purged and at the political level. I mean you know that could lead to some party infighting and whatnot. But anyways, to bring us back to your life, I think the 18th and 19th, with the 19th having a full moon and like Aquarius square Uranus, 18th and 19th are the most unpredictable in a lot of ways of this, like the most unpredictable days during this retrograde. So I would see like best case scenario that full moon and Aquarius on the 19th is like a fun social outing or like a party you're throwing and like with the Venus Saturn opposition. You're forming like really tight bonds with some people there. Or you're suddenly getting reached out to by somebody about a job offer or creative partnership or something with the retrograde in Leo.
Speaker 1:But at the same time for a lot of you it could be like an ex just randomly shows up unannounced and they like propose to you, like that is the Venus Saturn plus Mercury square Uranus combo, um. Or suddenly your phone goes out, uh, it doesn't work. Suddenly your messages won't, uh, won't send. Suddenly your um, you know some system that you use just like has a complete breakdown. Um, so that that time period you definitely want to exercise caution but also allow for those epiphanies to come in and also this Mercury retrograde, kazemi inferior conjunction thing is happening on Joe Biden's Chiron.
Speaker 1:So that's the part of Mercury retrograde that I think that gives me most anxiety in a way, like I wonder, if I don't know, like well, maybe I mean maybe Joe Biden announces something about his health, with Chiron being about the health he decided to step down as the nominee when Mercury was direct pretty much on his Chiron or something and in like an extreme circumstance, like maybe he would even like step down as president. I think that's like a stretch, like my intuition is saying it is a distinct enough possibility for me to mention on this episode, but I'm maybe only like I would put the odds at like 35 or something, which is not that, which is still pretty high, but you know it's. I mean it's still less likely, but I do think that we will definitely hear something newsworthy about Biden on August 18th and 19th. And also you know, as we go through this retrograde, and also you know, as we go through this retrograde again, that Fulman in Aquarius on the 19th is really going to either wreak havoc in your life or it's going to be this like electrifying fun situation. But then, as we continue on, mercury will keep squaring Uranus all the way until, like Virgo season, even on the 22nd I think it's still square. I mean it's really squaring Uranus for the like entire last phase of the retrograde, so pretty much the whole time it's in Leo it's squaring Uranus. To some extent that also will coincide with Venus opposite Neptune, so there's just a lot of deception going on there.
Speaker 1:I would imagine with Mercury Square Uranus, I mean it's inconsistent with the information that you're receiving. It's like people are telling you one thing one day, then another thing the next day. And another thing here is it feels like messages could just be leaked out just suddenly, like I don't know if it's like through a cyber security hack or if it's just like somebody posts like a screenshot of a message that's like really damning and compromising, but like I would go so far as to say, like the whole retrograde phase in leo, here you really shouldn't be like texting people anything that you wouldn't want out there. Like you, you have to be comfortable with like most things that you say during this retrograde, especially in the Leo portion. You kind of have to be comfortable with that message, as if it could be like screenshotted. Like that's how careful you have to be because, like Mercury square Uranus, information could come out just randomly or someone could like share something randomly that you thought was a private matter.
Speaker 1:And you know, with Mars and Jupiter, square Saturn and Pisces, it does feel like there's a bit of a scrutinizing from Saturn, of like a message or it's showing you the consequence of what you're saying or what you're sending to someone. And with Mars and Gemini, people have like sharp tongues right now. They're just saying whatever's on their minds, they're rambling, they're speaking out of turn, they're oversharing, they're just absolute gaffe factories and so, like right now you just want to know when to stop talking, basically when to stop sending that message, when to hold back, when you're pissed off. Because I feel like, with Mars and Gemini squaring off with the other malefic Saturn Pisces, like if you lose your temper and you go on this tirade and you denigrate somebody or you just say something really hurtful, I feel like Saturn is going to really judge that and Saturn is the Lord of Karma.
Speaker 1:So it's like if you are berating somebody through a text, somehow that conversation may come to light in a really unsavory context where it's like someone finds out about that conversation. They're like, oh, you said that to this person Well, I don't want to be friends with you if you're going to be, you know, eviscerating people for no reason. Like that's the energy of this, and but I think that there are even going to be messages about that were exchanged between, like, celebrities or high profile people that also get leaked out. And I wouldn't be surprised if, um, you know someone, especially like a celebrity, who's like sending a drunk text or something like or I mean really anyone here. It just this is like the worst time to send a drunk text, especially during a Mercury retrograde. I think that that's part of it too. I think that some people might get intoxicated and then reach out to their ex and, with the Venus-Saturn opposition, they may be talking about how lonely they are and how much they miss you and how guilty they feel about this and that and how they can make it right. But it just feels so messy it's like I wouldn't, really I wouldn't listen to that, I wouldn't take it that seriously. I would wait until mercury's direct even to um, ideally right, wait until mercury's direct to like, even like.
Speaker 1:Think about going back to an old relationship now. Like there are a small percentage of people who, during that kazemi in mid-august, will realize like they'll. They and their ex will mutually realize like, oh my god, this was the greatest relationship for me and it has. It has longevity because of that saturn opposition. They realize that, but for the most part, I think it's very one-sided. For most of you it's like an ex might reach out to you or you might reach out to an ex about again this epiphany you had oh no, I think we're lifelong partners and then Saturn can lay down the hammer and just reject and cause rejection though. So if you reach out to that ex in mid-August, don't expect for your words to be embraced. And if an ex reaches out to you and, you know, makes this grand gesture, like you know proposing to you which is a Venus-Saturn opposition type thing, you know, prepare to say no to that. You know, and I just I would just wait until Mercury is direct, like even if you feel the pull towards that person when they reach out to you, like you have a bias towards the past during a Mercury retrograde, but you can't remember, you can't conflate that with wanting to be with an ex. So, as I'm just looking at these charts and just kind of channeling during this podcast, like I'm starting to realize that this is again.
Speaker 1:This is a very messy Mercury retrograde, because it just feels like people want to say everything that's on their mind, they want to share everything and they're like taking things personally, they're digging into people, they're getting under people's skin. With Mars, gemini and with Jupiter and Gemini, kind of egging the Mars-Gemini on and augmenting it. It's like Saturn's waiting there in a superior square to be like you know, if you, you know, take things too personally, or you wrap your ego up too much in this conversation, or if you go after somebody, you get into a verbal sparring match, like there's ripple effects Pisces is the ocean, pisces is the water, saturn and Pisces sending out ripple effects. So it's like one small misstep that you make in a conversation can ripple out and become a much bigger deal than you expected. On the other hand, if you, you know, tread carefully during this retrograde and you don't bite someone's head off with your words, then that Venus-Saturn opposition is actually the time where you realize I'm ready. I'm ready to take the next step. I'm ready to take the next step with this person Because we've really done the work, we have infused the relationship with a lot of passion during Venus and Leo, which, by the way, hopefully was a better Venus and Leo experience for you than when it was retrograde last summer. So it's like if you've really built a great model in a relationship, then you could really commit to someone at this time. But otherwise I just think that Venus-Saturn opposition could really sever a lot of connections because people lost their cool. Mars and Gemini loses its cool, mars and Gemini again. It just loses perspective and it says it makes a statement that it can't come back from and Mars breaks something, breaks something off. So I mean, especially for relationships where people are not aligned politically, like that feels pretty messy right now.
Speaker 1:Another aspect of the Mercury retrograde phase is, you know, I mean Mars is squaring Saturn. And when Mars was in Pisces, you know we did have a lot of tension between Iran and Israel and we had like remember ships going out into the Mediterranean to gear up for potential war. So now that Mars is squaring that point, from April, during the Aries solar eclipse, by the way, I mean there probably will be a continuation of maritime-related conflicts. Maritime-related conflicts and, with Pisces being oil, there could be impacts to Iran's oil supply. I don't know if it's like sanctions on their oil production or if, through the tension in the Middle East, the supply of oil is constricted.
Speaker 1:But yeah, obviously that's a major factor during this Mercury retrograde and with Mercury retrograde squaring Uranus, for much of this retrograde there could be all kinds of just misunderstandings at the global level between nations, where one country you know receives a message erroneously from another country. That leads to some kind of conflict. I mean it just feels like we're walking on eggshells here. So, yeah, I mean there's a lot of reasons to be cautious right now. Now, I don't want to like betray my statement at the beginning of the podcast. I mean there's a lot of reasons to be cautious right now. Now, I don't want to betray my statement at the beginning of the podcast. It still stands out.
Speaker 1:You shouldn't live in fear or anxiety about a Mercury retrograde. But relative to most Mercury retrogrades, this one is more precarious. So just to summarize the episode today, remember that Mercury retrograde is a common phenomenon. It is something that it's a necessary phase where we need to slow down and we need to look back over all the sort of the multitude of decisions that we made while Mercury was direct, over the previous three months, and Mercury retrograde can actually help us refine something or finish something or close the loop on something or get closure with someone.
Speaker 1:But the retrograde in this case does demand a very, very careful approach in communication. Do not send a text message that you would not want screenshotted. Do not send like a drunk text. I mean, I know it sounds like common sense to be like just maintain your composure, but in this case you really have to, because people are probably going to be coming at you. Like with Mars and Gemini square Saturn, there's a lot of frustration and people may just like vocalize those frustrations to you, but they may get kind of petty, especially like right at the outset, during the square to Mercury and Virgo. They might act like someone might actually attempt to get under your skin. So just don't take the bait.
Speaker 1:As long as you don't take the bait, then you know, by the time of that Kazemi on August 18th, you're just, you know you're getting ahead, you're you know you're focused, you're allowing for this epiphany to come through that helps you complete some sort of major project or pursuit. You are also, by the way, hopefully being very careful while you drive during this retrograde. You're hopefully also anticipating travel delays, and so you're leaving for the airport a little bit earlier. Travel delays, and so you're leaving for the airport a little bit earlier. You are hopefully careful while you're on the water in any kind of boating situation and don't expect your devices to work as planned. I mean, you may want to back up your files and also, if you can delay major negotiations, you should do that. And also, if you can delay major negotiations, you should do that. And contract signings or massive purchases, you should delay.
Speaker 1:And with Mars and Gemini I said this last week as well, but this is a great time, though, to complete that last mile on a creative project or a writing project and, yeah, really refine it. So Mercury will station direct, finally, on August 28th, and by that point, you know, mars is squaring Neptune a little bit. So you know, maybe some kind of respiratory illnesses in the news at that time and maybe more maritime-related disasters are occurring, to be honest. And actually one more thing there. I mentioned this on my video today on TikTok and Instagram, but I wonder if there's some kind of controversy in the healthcare system or maybe it's just like a cybersecurity incident regarding a hospital or something, a chain of hospitals. But I just wonder if there's a conversation between health officials. That is being publicized and it paints some health officials in a bad light, so that would be another possibility.
Speaker 1:But as Mercury starts to station direct August 28th, you will start to regain that sense of momentum, and then we get a Virgo. You know, we get a new moon shortly thereafter, on September 2nd, so that's nice, nice refresh moment. Hopefully, this episode gave you, though, some some, just some good tips to navigate it more effectively. And, yeah, and I do hope that you have a really successful Mercury retrograde, because it can be, like I said, for the reasons I mentioned.
